About
Synopsis
Tsumugu Logic follows Tsumugu Taki, a fresh first-year of Meiryo University who just moved to Nagoya. He lives in the Wakawa House with Sosei Morotomiya, and reunites with his highschool crush Kotoko Yotsutsuji at university. Tsumugu has many doubts about the future and is unsure of what to do with his life. He tries to go with the flow and see where life takes him.
*The game is age rated 16+ due to strong language and mature themes such as violence, sexual assault, and suicide.

Game
Tsumugu Logic (TL) is the fifth title under SEEC's ESC-APE by SEEC series of similar escape mystery visual novel games. It comprises of 12 chapters, the 8-chapter prologue establishing the characters and setting for the 4-chapter main story. In each chapter, there is a main mystery that the player has to gather clues and evidence for to solve in "Search" segments that culminates in "Interrogation" segments that uncover the answer. The game has a ticket system to unlock each stage, so if you're F2P you might take months to finish the game. I only played the English version which supposedly does not have as many features as the original Japanese, including voice acting.
The story is a retelling from Tsumugu's perspective. It is framed through Tsumugu writing out his experiences since coming to Nagoya until the present-day after he comes home from the uninhabited island. Before each chapter's title card, present-day Tsumugu gives a bit of commentary which is evident by the writing paper in the background.
Despite not being an otome game, TL has a rapport meter system. If you choose a certain option in some points in the story, the meter will go up for that character. The option you choose doesn't affect the route itself, but you need to fill the meters for all the characters that have them in order to move on to the main story. This can be done by replaying stages.
*As of 25 October 2023 and 19 February 2025, the English version Tsumugu Logic is no longer available on the PlayStore and AppStore. I have linked a gameplay playlist in Misc.
ESC-APE by SEEC
ESC-APE by SEEC is a series of escape adeventure mystery visual novel mobile games by SEEC Inc. The titles under this series are, in release order, Alice's Spiritual Judge, Yotsume God, The Prison Boys, Tasokare Hotel, Tsumugu Logic, and Uyrh's Prescription. There is also Yotsume God -Reunion-, Tasokare Hotel Re:newal, and Tasokare Hotel -Tsubomi- which are revivals/continuations of their original games. SEEC's other mobile games would fall under SEEC Casual, these are mostly otome games. Of the mentioned games, only Uyrh's Prescription and the revivals/contiuations have not been given an official English translation at any point.
I'm calling it a "series" in the sense that they are similar in gameplay style, the stories themselves are entirely detached from one another. However, there may be references to previous games in other segments of the game. The Going Out feature in Tsumugu Logic features locations and items from previous games like the Tasokare Hotel and the Cheshire Cat's mask (from Alice's Spiritual Judge). While not an ESC-APE by SEEC game, many fans of this series also like The Caged Garden Cock Robin and tend to include it with the series. Weirdly (at least to me), SEEC is mainly a travel and media company that has a mobile game department for some reason.
Story
The numbers (eg. [4]) are the stages being cited from. I won't state things that are apparent from the character profiles.
Cultural Context Notes
The story largely takes place in Nagoya, the capital city of Aichi Prefecture, located in the Chubu region around the centre of Japan. The people in west Nagoya speak the Nagoya dialect, which has similarities to the standard Japanese and Kansai dialect.
Tsumugu is from an unspecified rural town in Nara Prefecture, located in the Kansai region around the south-west of Japan. The people in Nara generally speak a variation of the Kansai dialect, having many differences from standard Japanese.
Tsumugu's mother is from Itabashi, Tokyo. The Tokyo dialect is generally considered standard Japanese.
Prologue
Chapter 3: Cheating
Tsumgu visits the Mystery Club. Daimon introduces him to Yoshihito Yoshimoto, the leader of the Travel Club next door. The two mention a famous thing that happens in the international economy department (of which Tsumugu is in) but don't explain. On his way to class, Tsumugu passes by two people arguing at the staircase. In class, Tsumugu tries talking to people in his class. He is introduced to Toma Sakurai and Sarii Sato, who goes by Sally. Tsukasa is also in this class. Today, they are having a surprise test for English class. After the test, Tsumugu find a mirror on the floor and keeps it, thinking it's Sally's.
The next week, the English teacher announced that Toma cheated on the test off Tsukasa, who was sitting diagonally in front from him. Sally defended him, saying he finished the test quickly so he couldn't have. The teacher wasn't going to punish Toma anyway so they didn't bother investigating. Toma confronts Tsukasa for cheating off him. Toma would have no reason to cheat since his first language is English. Tsukasa denies it, pointing out its implausibility, then runs off.
In the cafeteria, Tsumugu confronts Tsukasa but he still denies it. Tsumugu is resolved to find out how Tsukasa did it. During his search, he meets Yoshimoto again who is with Fumi Koike. They tell him the English test is very famous and takes place annually. Daimon told Tsukasa about the test. Tsumugu tries to get more details from Sally and Toma and eats lunch with them??
Tsumugu runs into Kotoko who is with her friend group. Within the group, Tsumugu sees a guy he saw earlier and a gang girl.

Personal & Opinions
I first discovered TL in 2020 when I stumbled upon it in the AppStore. I had never played an ESC-APE by SEEC visual novel before so I still hold this as my favourite game despite other games arguably being better. I finished the prologue on my first playthrough but I couldn't get past the last part (I'm fairly sure there is a mistake in the guide the game gives to unlock the Mystery Club's stage). I restarted the game and finished it completely then replayed it again to catch the foreshadowing. I accidentally deleted the app so I'm trying to finish the game for a fourth time but I haven't been properly reading it. What I'm trying to say is I've played these games before. Anyway, I remember on my second playthrough being surprised when there was more chapters beyond Chapter 8. I thought I was going to be done with that shit!
The first time I played the main story, the murder aspect was a surprise. The prologue made the game seem like it was a slice of life with some higher stakes plots between, drifting through life just like Tsumugu. That lull is intentional, I think. Suddenly, someone actually dies and the stakes are heightened. We start questioning if the characters we thought we could trust are actually here with malicious intentions. I was in a bit of denial about Kotoko being the main murderer at first. I think in the back of my mind, I sort of expected her to end up with Tsumugu like how it goes in most stories.
I think what has kept me drawn to this game for all these years, besides sentimentality, is the foreshadowing. Once you replay the game, you start to notice little things that didn't seem very consequential before and interpret character behaviour in a different light. This mostly applies to Kotoko, the twist villain. At first, she seems like she is just being coy in response to Tsumugu's advances. But after the twist, it's more of her trying to hold in her hatred for Tsumugu and maintain her facade. Oh, I only realised this on my fourth playthrough but they literally show Tsumugu almost drowning scene in Chapter 1?? That's not even foreshadowing bro that's just up front in your face.
I like how despite being the player's character, Tsumugu still has a distinct personality and not just a self-insert. The way Tsumugu approaches certain topics is quite interesting to me. In Chapter 4? Tsumugu said (or at least the "correct" choice was (technically the choice did not affect the story (if I remember correctly) but this was the choice that would increase your rapport meter with Sosei so I'm inclined to believe it's the more "correct one")) that if he knew someone who wanted to commit suicide, he would talk it out to hear their reasoning first. If it made sense, he wouldn't stop them. I'm not sure why this single interaction has still stuck out to me but it's quite interesting, isn't it? I've never heard of such a take before because the idea that there is a "reasonable" justification for ending your own life sounds kind of absurd, at least among our current society's advocation for mental health. (For context, Tsumugu was telling the Morotomiya twins about Suzuki's suicide attempt and they asked what he would've done about it).
In the Chapter 2, Tsumugu also willingly admits that he fantasises about committing acts of violence against people he doesn't like, but treats it as something that would only happen in his head. I think this juxtaposes Kotoko. Tsumugu has violent thoughts he would never enact so he has no problem sharing that he thinks of those things. Whereas Kotoko, with her friendly and perfect image, would never admit something like that. Then she ends up being the one to actually murder people in a very premeditated manner.
If I'm being honest, I don't have much interest in the Travel Club members. I feel like we didn't really establish much of an attachment to them prior to the main story. Chapter 5 and 7 were too short to really make me love the characters, and Chapter 6 established that Nozaki and Akira are pretty much assholes. I suppose my own preferences also come into play because the Travel Club members seem like the type of people I would dislike in real life. TL has quite a lot of characters so it's hard to focus on all of them. Like, Suguha and Shun are barely relevant to me. Fumi is just her boobs 90% of the time until we find out she's a rapist. However, I personally have formed more attachment to the characters closer in Tsumugu's circle like Sosei, Kotoko, and Sally. Even the Mystery Club is more interesting to me than the Travel Club.
The game also has many alternative endings that can come at any turn. I don't play many visual novels so maybe this is a standard for the medium, but I like how it gives more opportunities for characterisation outside of the main route.
Tsumugu's feelings for Kotoko are very shallow. He has a general feeling of wanting a girlfriend, this is a common feeling among men. (I think? idk I'm not a man. But I see it often in media) Kotoko just happens to be who he sets his eyes on since she's the first woman who was nice to him and gotten friendly with since coming to university. I don't think I ever genuinely rooted for this relationship because there isn't really a reason to. Tsumugu doesn't show any sincere desire to know Kotoko deeper and just sees her as someone to obtain, a goal. Everyone wants her so Tsumugu should, too. To be fair, Kotoko is a very emotionally distant person. She is very idolised, including by Tsumugu, so she doesn't really become very emotionally vulnerable until the very end. Ultimately, this is part of why a relationship between them would've failed inevitably, putting aside Kotoko's feelings for Tsumugu.
After finishing TL, I tried playing the other ESC-APE by SEEC games. It's hard to not know about them when their ads are placed quite prominently on TL's home screen. I have finished Tasokare Hotel and Alice's Spiritual Judge once each. I started playing Yotsume God and The Prison Boys at some point but I have not completed them nor played them in a while. Honestly, it's a bit frustrating seeing how much special treatment Tasokare Hotel has been getting for the past few years. A revival game, sequal game, anime, and STAGE PLAY?? I think TH is the golden child of ESC-APE by SEEC, and I'm assuming the most popular. Idk, TL will always be my favourite even if it isn't the best game of the series. But with the way the game flows, adaptations would actually be quite difficult. I did watch the first episode of the TH anime when it came out, but I haven't come back to it since (because I forgot).
Old fan art from when I was like 12-13 years old (collapsed to save me from cringing)
Collection
I know this is a Tsumugu Logic shrine but Tasokare Hotel is an adjacent game so whatever. TH has been releasing new stuff in recent years so it makes sense that I could find TH merch instead of TL. There is TL merch on Mercari Japan, though, but I don't have time for that right now.

i am in the middle of writing chapter 3's summary and im remembering how much i hate writing summaries. idk how much is necessary and what isnt. this is the exact reason i nuked the
WHY IS TSUMUGU RIPPED?? WHAT IS THIS GUY DOING??
honestly everyone thinking tsumugu is a gang member is kinda funny to me cuz this guy doesnt look particularly,, gang-ly?? he literally just looks like a normal guy. like tokio 100% looks like a gang member, but tsumugu?
ok i was almost going to be like "kotoko cant use a keyboard??" but typing japanese on a pc is lwokey hell so yk what i cant judge. but im really confused how this takes place in 2018 if a not insignificant number of young characters are so un-tech savvy
OK but like... kotoko couldve just NOT pretend to be yuu... idk why she had to do that.
ok so in the first stage tsumugu says he "took 2 hours and a half by kintetsu train from nara pref., and then another 20 minutes from nagoya station by train on the toyama subway line." i wanted to look up where the wakawa house could approximately be but im very confused. nagoya station doesnt seem to have any subway lines by that name. when i search about a toyama line, i only get results for lines in toyama prefecture, which is on the on the side of the chubu region. so... i guess its fictional =(
genuinely how is sosei even alive. 0 survival skills
that feeling when your ship is doomed because one of THEM IS DEAD 😭😭😭 this is about tsumugu and yuu ofc ofc. bro. BRO WHY IS MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER DEAD. IDK HOW HE'S MY FAV BUT HE IS.
maybe tsumugu and sosei shouldve just jumped out of the storehouse's second story window. i guess it wouldve been too hard on sosei's joints (ge get it cuz cuzzzz he old man 😹😹)
as im making this shrine i realise the reason yuu's sprite is in his school uniform despite him supposedly being in university is because he only appears in flashbacks. AND THATS ALL HE CAN DO ANYWAY. SOBBING SOBBING UGH I LOVE YUU 😭😭
fumi is born on 9/11 😭😭
